Materials Needed

  • Something to balance on - could be balance beams, pillows, etc.

  • Some type of obstacles/ things to have "swim" in the water like ocean animals

  • Sooters: (optional)

Let's Play!

Choose an area to be the "pirate ship" - can be any area you designate as such.

Set up your balance beams in whichever way you like/ meets the abilities of the children playing. For example:

  • Easiest: One board in a straight line

  • More challenging: multiple boards in a straight line

  • Challenging: Place boards so that children must turn while walking

  • Most Challening:Place boards so that children must turn while walking and with obstacles on the boards that children must step over.

Once you have set-up the beams, explain to the children that when you say "Arrr it's time to walk the plank," they must do so as quickly as possible and then swim back to their "boat." If you have scooters, they could lay on their stomachs and push themselves back to the boat. If not, they can crawl back.

Once all children are back to the boat, play again - making it more difficult if it seems children are ready!
